Respiratory

We need to see you at least annually for a full check if you have asthma or COPD.

Asthma is caused by inflammation of the airways. These are the small tubes, called bronchi, which carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, the bronchi will be inflamed and more sensitive than normal. Our practice nurse Sarah has a specialist asthma qualification. She will offer advice, check your peak flow and inhaler technique and ensure your treatment is effective. Inhaler technique is very important in ensuring treatment is effective and we recommend our patients with asthma view videos available at the link below which show you how to use your inhaler properly.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. People with COPD have trouble breathing in and out. This is referred to as airflow obstruction. Breathing difficulties are caused by long-term damage to the lungs, usually because of smoking. Our nurse Sarah is also qualified to provide annual COPD checks.
